It's our day! What a great start we have had. There will be no pie fights though. I think the best way is to just jump right in. Lissa Alexander, our fearless leader sent us a few questions to get this ball rolling.
1. What is on your bucket list? - That's easy, I've always wanted to go to Ireland - Polly.
Well, that's a good one. I think mine would be to take a summer off and visit all the Major League Baseball parks and watch a game in each. - Laurie
2. What's would be your favorite thing "deep fried" at the fair? - Milky Way candy bar - Polly
I whole heartedly agree! - Laurie
Which brings me to this fun fact - Not all Milky Way candy bars are created equal.

You know the little Milky Way bars that you hand out at Halloween? Forget them. Barely a Milky Way. I Don't know why, but they just aren't. The regular Milky Way - Wonderful. They've been a Minick and Simpson favorite for over 50 years, but the new 2 To Go Milky Way bar - PERFECTION! It is different. Basically, there's a greater caramel to nougat ratio. Genius! Polly told me, I told Leigh Ann, and now there is a 2 To Go Milky Way stash that follows us around. I'm sure there will be some at Quilt Market. One could only imagine the sublime candy ecstasy that would be a deep fried/2 To Go Milky Way. It should be on our bucket list.
3. Your favorite Country Fair memory..... Well, I don't know about favorite, but it's a memory - for Polly. I sadly, don't have any. (Again, if you are new to the blog - Polly and I are sisters who have the same parents, but completely different childhoods due to a 16 year age difference).
Polly joined 4H when she was a pre-teen. We lived in a small rural town and we lived in town.
Most of Polly's friends were farm kids and she wanted to do what they did, so she joined. Soon after there was talk of participating in the County Fair. Animal husbandry was out of the question for obvious reasons. Next was a sewing challenge. A dish towel. With lots of help and guidance (basically her friend Mary Lee sewed it) the dish towel was completed. The baking challenge for the county fair loomed. The competition for her age group was a cupcake challenge. Bakers were to make white cupcakes with white frosting. A plate was given to the contestants so all entries would look more or less the same. Polly tackled the challenge with enthusiasm and submitted her 3 cupcakes. The 4H girls then left the baking exhibit and enjoyed the fair. When they returned they were elated as Polly had won!!! A blue ribbon! Imagine her embarrassment when her friends asked about her recipe and she said she used this.

Not everyone saw the humor in the situation. Today we think it's pretty hysterical. Sadly, our Mother was not a baker. If there was a cake in the house it came from a bakery. Just rounding up a wooden spoon, bowl, and cupcake tin was a challenge for Polly. What else was a resourceful girl to do? Polly was pretty proud of herself that she bought the BEST mix. Obviously. It did win the blue ribbon. Well done, Mr. Duncan Hines! Blue ribbon indeed.
In honor of Polly's long ago Blue Ribbon - here is our project - a Blue Ribbon pincushion. We thought our Grandfathers' award winning horses were a better subject than the infamous cupcakes.

Hey, Everyone!!! Here is where you go to download the pattern!
If you leave a comment here, you could be one of the 3 winners of Prairie Paisley II pre-cuts. Someone will win a Fat 1/8th bundle, or a Layer Cake™, or a Jelly Roll™ - The Random Number Generator will pick three winners. Make your comment before Midnight Wednesday September 14th.

Thanks for stopping by. Make sure to visit Sandy of American Jane tomorrow for the next stop on the Moda Country Fair Blog Hop.

The blue ribbon pincushion is great, thanks for sharing it.
I can only dream of winning the paisley fabrics....ever since I was about 9 or 10 I've had a thing for paisley....not one of those over the top things, but a gentle liking of them....even when they went out of fashion, I still liked them, so these precuts would make my day!
Hugs
Naomi
I don't have paisley in my stash so it would make a great addition if I won, thanks for the chance.
Had to laugh about the baking contest. Mum tells me that story is not the only Blue ribbon tale she has heard of in all her baking years. The best one she told me is about the lady who bought scones from the local baker and passed them off as her own, she won the ribbon. When the local baker found out who won, he never told a soul for years. But he did have a very regular customer who spent alot in his store!! Thanks for sharing the pincushion. I am going to combine your pattern with Bunny Hills cupcake seems only fitting with your story.
I like the dark Milky Way bars but I'll have to give that new one a try. I've never had a Milky Way deep fried but will put that on my list too.
Great story! The pincushion is a sweet way to remember. Thanks for the giveaway chance!
Oh the cake story! Adorable!
My favorite Milky Way is the dark one. I've had the 2 to go but didn't notice the different caramel/nougat ratio. Thanks for giving me a reason to go buy one. :)
ohmygosh, I'll be laughing about that cupcake story for a long time! It's great! Neat pincushion! I love these fabrics and would so enjoy working with them! Thanks for the opportunity.
I love the pincushion. I've loved horses all my life and coincidentally Milky Way has been my favorite candy bar for as long as I can remember (of course I'm 61 no so how far back I remember could be questionable, LOL). Nah...since I was a little kid it has been my favorite. Thanks for a chance to have some Prairie Paisley treasure. Hugs...
I am so looking forward to Prairie Paisley II coming to stores loved the first one, can't wait to cut into the the new range.
I have noticed that Milky Ways aren't as thick as they used to be either!
Great story about the cupcakes! I am so looking forward to Praire Paisley Two!!! I have seen the orginal fabric used in quilts and was disappointed that I had missed the line and finally it back and looks even better.
This pincuchion is a winner...my son's first ever entry in the fair (Snickerdoodles) won the Grand Champion...with a name like that, they deserved to win.

I love Paisleys and have been collecting them to make a "Special Paisley Quilt". Thanks for a chance to add to my collection.
Your post has me hungry for fried milky ways and cupcakes. I always thought Duncan Hines made the best cake. My mom won a prize with their Devil's Food. Thanks for the giveaway.
The paisley fabric is cute - I've never seen it before! And I'm sure that even with a mix, any cake I make would never even get past the judges... that is a great story! Thanks for the chacne to work with those fun fabrics!

I would have to say that the Milky Way dark is my favorite candy bar! Love the 4-H story.
I do believe that would be my daughter's choice of how to bake a cake even though I taught her better. Some people just don't enjoy the kitchen is her reply. I just sigh and pray for my grandchildren. Love the fabric!
Thanks for the fun! And I love those fabrics!
Love the colors and designs in Prairie Paisley II! Thank you for the chance to win! The cupcake story was great, thanks for sharing it!
Beautiful fabric! I'm pretty sure it's hard to beat a cake mix!
I just love the fair story with the cupcakes. I've never entered anything in the fair. I loved to cook and sew growing up, but our family never went to the fair. The milky way candy bar is my favorite too. I've never heard of it deep fat fried. Are you kidding us? Won't it melt? I'm very curios about this. Thanks for the adorable pincushion pattern and the generous giveaway.

Ellen
Hahahaah, Duncan Hines. Makes me think of that TV episode where the characters sell their grandmother's secret sauce recipe until they realize that it was actually Betty Crocker. Heeee..
The fabric is beautiful, I hope I win!
Ah, Polly is my kind of baker. My mother didn't bake either, so I say it's in the genes and chromosomes! Love PP2! You hit a home run - again!
When I was in 4-H I had a good friend (a boy) that was in 4-H with us. He always made perfectly round cookies with nice smooth edges. I never could figure out how he did this and accused him of his mother making them for him. Now, many years later, I hope he doesn't remember that. lol
Love the fabric and would love to win.
Loved your cake story and thanks for the adorable pin cushion. I so love paisley and am always on the lookout for new paisley fabric. These precuts would be so fun to work with at my house!

Looks like a great line of fabrics to do lots of fun things with.
Love the running horse. The paisley fabrics are gorgeous. Thanks for the giveaway.
Long gone are the days where they gave plates out. My granddaughter made a pie and used my daughter's
Pampered Chef pie pan. When they went back to pick up their pie
plates my daughter's had disappeared. No body had a clue where it went or with whom.
That was her last year of 4-H.
Thanks for sharing too!!!
Great story about the cupcakes, we have similar one about a brownie contest we had last year at a family reunion!!
What a great cake story! I loved Prairie Paisley so I know I will have to get Prairie Paisley II or win some.
Have you ever tried deep fried oreos? They're pretty good but now I really want to try a deep fried candy bar. I missed the first Prairie Paisley because I was just getting into quilting and didn't know that fabric lines don't stay around forever!
What a great post! I loved Prairie Paisley 1 and I know I will love number 2 just as much! Thanks for such a great giveaway and chance to win!
I see nothing wrong with entering those cupcakes! That is exactly what I would have done....today & yesterday. LOL Good thing my daughter never wanted to be in 4H she would have had the same problems. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the neat project! Love those stories too! Thanks
Pat D

LOL, great cupcake story! Thanks for a fun blog hop and cut pin cushion.
Someone recently complimented a cake I made...went on and on about it actually...but I really didn't understand the big deal! It was from a box. All I did was follow the directions! Duncan Hines does it again...
I love the fabric! I don't see much red white and blue stuff.
Loved hearing about 4-H and fairs. Sounds like my childhood. And thanks SO MUCH for reincarnating Prairie Paisley. I loved it the first time and will love it again I am sure.
Love the pin cushion, love the fabric. Thanks for the giveaway.
Out here in darkest Africa we don't have the same Milky Bars that you do in the States, but we do have horses, and this pinchushion is a sure thing for a Christmas giftie for a quilting friend of mine who at 74 is winning all the prizes in dressage at local horse shows. Quite amazing. The Prairie Paisleys I'll keep for myself!
....Margaret

Thanks for the wonderful cupcake story! My Mother wasn't a baker either. She was fabulous at real meals, but not so good with baking and candy. One Christmas, she and I made fudge. Unfortunately, I grapped the McCormick Root Beer extract instead of the McCormick vanilla extract. That was the last time we made candy together:) Thanks for designing Prairie Paisley II.I've been hoarding my scraps of the first line.
My niece really loves my out of the box chocolate cake with out of the can frosting! Thanks for the pincushion pattern. Love your fabric.

Always wanted to be in 4H. I lived in a big city with no access. Thanks for sharing all your creative ideas!
We still are involved in 4-H and people are still using cake mixs for their projects. A judge I know told me it's still a problem. lol
Can't believe what wonderful "fair memories" were created by my children at the Ross County Fair in Ohio. They were "horse kids" so we lived at the fairgrounds for a week and had "fun shows" every day. I treasure those times. Thanks for the neat horse pincushion and the truely yummy fabric as well!
Enjoyed the Fair story....good for you!! I love the paisley fabrics and would LOVE to win the prize!! Thanks for sharing.

Hi!
Thank you for the pattern and the give away of your new fabric line!
Red, White and Blue works for so many in so many ways!
Take care, Leslie
Love that paisley!
And completely 'get' the cupcake story. Our favourite brownies come from a packet...
I LOVE Polly's cake story-a girl has to do what a girl has to do! Even though we (Polly)are probably close in age, our childhoods were entirely different (we were poor) we never had a cake mix in the house! If we wanted dessert we had to make it (from scratch). Love the new Paisley print and the pin cushion is wonderful!
My sister and I have the same age difference, and I frequently remind her we were not raised in the "same house". I'm SO excited about this fabric line - PP #1 remains one of my favorites, and can't wait to get my hands on PP #2 - thanks for the opportunity!
Thanks for the great giveaway and the inspirational blog.
Thank you for the free template pattern! And thank you for a chance to win. :-)

When I was about 6 I went to the fair and got cotton candy on my knee, which caused me to limp. There was a polio epidemic and my parents rushed me to the hospital, only to have my knee washed off. Love the new fabric; you've converted me to a red, white and blue lover.
