I'm starting a new quilt. In anticipation of a long, wonderful Sunday evening watching all the Oscar hoopla, I am getting lots and lots of applique ready to go. Every flat surface in the house is strewn with graph paper, rulers, pencils, scissors, fabric, and what not. It's a mess. To get an idea that's in my head, onto fabric, there is a long series of messes to make and clean up. It's just part of the package. I wish it wasn't, but it is. I would like to create in a serene and clean, and inspirational place (and sometimes it starts out that way) but, it never ends up that way. Some of my colleagues create in that atmosphere. Remember this photo from American Patchwork & Quilting of
Anne Sutton's studio?

Or how about
Joanna's lovely, cozy spot....

Even Polly makes sure everything is in it's place.

I turned around to take a picture of my cutting table. Here it is...

Oh well. My plan is to get my applique pieces cut out tonight and tomorrow and by Sunday night I hope to be clean and serene too.
Speaking of movies....... this was taped on my front door yesterday morning when Gibby and I went out for a walk.

A note from
Universal Studios. Yes, THAT Universal studios. Here is the first sentence.

Despite the unglamorous name of the Production company - kind of exciting news. Well, what follows is a shooting schedule of the street in front of our house. It starts next week and there are currently barrels out on the curb ready to block off the avenue. Last week there were lots of local news stories about George Clooney being here in town scouting areas for his upcoming movie. The other actors in
George's movie.....are Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, and Paul Giamatti. Alas, this isn't that movie. The big star attached to this film is Jason Segel from How I Met Your Mother.

Not really the same, is it? Sigh. So, after I clean up my sewing mess, I will clean up Gibby's nose prints from the front window. I'll keep you posted.

Employee my filing method. Ram everything you don't currently need under a piece of furniture. It works!
Your workspace is more like mine, lol.

I'd feel more at home in your space!
Sounds like some excitement in your front yard soon. Looking forward to the details!

yup, i get fabric piles like that too--especially when dealing with a whole stack of FQ's. Thank heavens for a nearby twin bed which doubles as my third (relatively)flat surface after the 6 ft sewing table and the 3 ft cutting table.
a quilter armed with a stash of fabric, a rotery cutter, and a ruler can be a dangerous person at times! LOL.
best wishes on your new quilt!
I wish I could figure out how to neatly prep applique! I make the biggest mess .... we must be somehow related! How exciting about the movie production on your street. It'll be fun to watch the goings-on!
You are a sweet and creative lady! Please dont even try to compare yourself with others , you are unique, your own self expression and a fabric diva so dont clean up or the ideas might start to become stiffled..
Your workspace looks alot like mine! Who names a company Drunken Pig?? LOL

There is comfort in knowing that someone else out there has a workplace like mine--I believe it shows much creativity at work--at least on your part!! I enjoy your posts so much and don't stop to post as much as I should when I stop by every day. Enjoy the shenanigans outside next week! And enjoy Sunday night Oscars and appliquing! Jeanne L. in MO
Yes, I admire a tidy workplace as well. It only lasts a few minutes here. Have fun with the movies!
Wow! How fun and exciting! It should be interesting.....keep us updated :)
LOL Don't feel too badly. My sewing table looks a LOT like yours!
Kind of exciting all the movie business coming to Michigan isn't it? I guess it's a good thing:/
If I were organized, I wouldn't be able to find anything. Thanks for sharing! I feel much better now!
Yep my sewing room looks just like that!
Be sure to let Gibby out while they are filming, he could be a star
Ohh, I would love to watch Jason Segel making a movie (I love "How I Met Your Mother") but I would reallyyyy love to watch Ryan Gosling, etc. making a movie! I don't know how anyone who sews can keep their sewing room clean! I would bet that rooms that look like ours is a higher percentage than the ones that are spotless. Just saying.
Wow! First your fabric makes a cameo appearance in a movie and now maybe your house...since these things are supposed to happen in threes..you must be next!!

I love your studio--makes me feel right at home!
I love Anne Sutton's studio too, but the reality is that mine is just like yours. Mess must be conducive to our creativity!
Go Colin, you lovely man!!!
PS. Jason Segal may not be quite George Clooney, but I think he rates.
My workplace almost always looks like that. How can you plan and prep if you don't make a mess?
