Another neighbor told me that ALL quilts were tied. Despite my evidence of the photo in the magazine, I succumbed and tied it. The backing is a polyester/cotton sheet, so it is probably best that I didn't try to hand quilt it. That came later in my second quilt. It lived on my bed and went away to college with me. It is now a bed for cats in the bottom of Bill's closet. I tried to throw it away several years ago, but Bill salvaged it from the garbage. It is an archive of 1960's and 70's fabrics. Hardly any are 100% cotton.I will show my most recent quilts. Okay, not my most recent, but I have 4 tops/quilts in progress and they are for future patterns. These are the most recent before those. There isn't a whole lot of evolution except for the quality of materials and the fact I have rulers now - and I use them. The top on the left is my prototype of the quilt Seaside. It is still a top and hasn't been quilted yet. The one on the right is Seaside made with Wiscasset fabrics.

I love the first quilt and I'm glad Bill salvaged it! I can't believe that you even considered throwing it away! (And you know I love the Seaside quilt ~ both of them! ~ and Wiscasset.)
One-patch to nine-patch is definitely progress... but I think you're being modest. While I haven't seen it in person, I have seen that stunning Bethlehem star quilt you made with Vintage Reserve. I think you've come a VERY long way, baby!
Oh Laurie. . . I love the story behind your first quilt! That alone makes it a dear treasure. Isn't it amazing how the quilting bug gets ahold & just won't let go?! In you case say thats a good thing (for all of us!)

The Seaside quilt is beautiful in both fabrics, but Wiscasset is tops!

Both are beautiful in their own way. I think what shines out of both pictures is determination and a love affair being born.

You have come a long way, but both are wonderful quilts. Way to go Bill for saving it. I wore my first quilt out as it was on my bed every day for years. I also have to say I love the clothes line that you photo your quilts on. Oh to have a place to do that.

This is too funny. I love your first quilt and I think it's great Bill salvaged it; otherwise you wouldn't have been able to do a show 'n tell! I think we all agree you've improved since then. LOL My favorite "first quilt" was made by a woman in my quilt guild who was know for her beautiful, precise workmanship. Her first quilt was "eyeballed" and made with double-knit fabric - oh my...
I'm impressed that your first quilt turned out so well with just eyeing the size to cut the blocks. I LOVE your 9 patches. I think keeping treasures like our first quilts is so important to show us that we all had to start somewhere. It's great motivation.

Don't you miss the freedom of just cutting out squares and sewing them together? No right or wrong....everything just right. Makes me want to try an Ohio Star ...just grab my scissors and begin cutting out the pieces. No pattern needed! Doesn't that sound like fun?

I am impressed that you made such a big quilt as your first prject. I did a wall hanging - attic window, several shades of blue. How exciting was that? Wish I had a photo.......a friend has that piece....humm....
