Decoration Day

Does anyone still use that term for Memorial Day anymore? That was what our parents called the end of May holiday.  The internet told me that Decoration Day was the first name of the holiday after the Civil War.  Our parents aren't quite that old - but their parents and grandparents were.

We hope you have a fantastic Red, White and Blue holiday! Make sure to dress appropriately.

Whether you go to the pool....

Or a gala......

Or whether you curl up in your patriotic room and read a good book....

I too love the red, white and blue. Both the colors and what it stands for.

My paternal Grandmother always called it Decoration Day. While born in America, her family was Czech and so she had a bit of an accent. I loved the way she said, "Decoartion Day." Her son, my father, was killed in Vietnam, so the day was very special and is one of the reasons I am so patriotic. My maternal grandmother called it Memorial Day. I lived closer to her and she always filled planters with flowers (real flowers) and decorated the graves in the cemeteries. I often helped and it was doing this that I became interested in my family history. Nine years ago, my maternal Grandmother died on Memorial Day, and 5 years ago, my paternal Grandmother died on Decoration Day. Needless to say, the day is very meaningful to me.

Love your post ! Decoration Day was always what I heard in our household as well. And with reading that, my grandma's face appeared to me! Thank you for that. And a special thank you to all the men and women who have lost their lives defending our beautiful America.

Well, it's Memorial Day to me. My husband was a Vietnam vet and grandfather, WWII. Since moving to the smokey mountains, I associate decoration day with going to the cemeteries. They really take care of their cemeteries here, and there are quite a lot of old ones in the park and surrounding it. They are very pretty afterwards and there is always a huge picnic or dinner on the grounds, over the course of the weekend. Some cemeteries even have permanent pavilions and benches. I think this began after the Civil War. you go down these windy, curved mountain roads, and then bam! A pop of color. So pretty. Everyone is so respectful and keep them up all year, but right now they are freshly mown and pristine.

I love the red, white and blues! How fun that my friend Gayle won the bundle. I bought it myself at Sample Spree, after I visited my friends Clydene and Gayle (the same one). Coming from the Netherlands visiting Utah, what a coincidence is that?

It was Decoration Day in my home too, growing up. We used the day to honor my uncle who died in WWII in France, and all our other family members as well. I can always tell a Minick & Simpson! Such beautiful fabrics and patterns.

I loved the RW &B photos you posted! Made me enjoy the RW&B quilts even more. Such a great holiday. My Mom and I always put red geraniums on my Dad's grave. Dad was a WWII pilot of B-17's based in Italy but he flew all over Europe then.
