A New Start

Functional....

Beautiful....
Functional....

Functional....
Beautiful.....
This quilt is on my "to-do" list. (Beauty) It was made by Alma of Blackbird Designs and was featured in their book "When The Cold Wind Blows." I think it is one of their most beautiful quilts, and that is saying something. I have started a stash of fabric. It's still a very small stash and that is as far as I've gotten. My goal is to at least get one block ready to applique so I will have a travel project this year. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Unfortunately, I am not getting much quilting done that isn't directly related to our own published designs. (Function) That's my conundrum. Balancing beauty and function - need versus want. Work and play. This is my goal for the new year. Balance. Best wishes for your balancing act too.

HAHAHAHAHA! Functional is for losers!

That quilt is gorgeous! I was a huge Blackbird Designs fan when I was a cross-stitcher; I haven't even begun to consider their quilt patterns. In the meantime I'll just have to live vicariously through this quilt as you work on it. See? Now you have to work on it! :D

Happy New Year!

That quilt has called out to me as well. I have the book, but haven't started the stash for it, yet.

I think your quilts are beautiful, Laurie - not functional!

I wanted to make this quilt, too, when I got the book last year. Please post your progress on this one; maybe it'll inspire me to get going on it as well.

What a wonderful word to choose! I left my job last March in search of that very thing! Balance. And, I received the book Cold Win Blows for Christmas. I too love the quilt! How beautiful it is! But, I also have a kit of your quilt and others to make - so my challenge is which to do first? Thanks for all the beauty you bring into our world in your designs and in the sharing of yourself! Happy Happy New Year!

I couldn't have phrased it better - this is always my conflict - balancing the "me" quilts against those commissioned that buy the groceries!
All the best for the New Year - we expect ours to be accompanied by a three day snowfall - just waiting for it to start.

Wow. That quilt is freaking amazing. I hope you are able to make it...and find the time for projects other than "work quilts"--tho your work quilts are mighty amazing themselves!

From appearances, you seem to do a pretty good job of balancing ~ you make it all look good! Happy 2010 to you and Polly and your families. We know you'll come up with some very creative things this year

You read my mind. I got the rick rack for the trim just a couple weeks ago, but fabric collecting is still in progress. I have drooled and dreamed of this one!! Love the comparison of boots - got a big chuckle from that one!!
Happy New Year to you and Polly!!

Let me tell you about those boots... I bought a pair of gorgeous boots with heels like that about three years ago. Wore them once... after two hours of standing/walking in them, I started thinking that walking was highly overrated. People, places, whatever could come to me... cause I sure as [sic] wasn't walking to them/it.

The chair... I'm with you there! Functional is SO overrated! The beautiful chair is awesome. And it looks like it would be comfortable... okay, maybe not so much for stitching that beautiful applique quilt. But wouldn't your finished applique quilt look fabulous draped over the back of that chair?

Go for it! Hugs, pats and scratches to Gibby! And you and Bill too, of course. :)

Maybe your progress on the applique will motivate me. I just listed all my ufo's and the only thing I can start this year is an applique! hehehe
